The Reunion of Mary by Annelie Solis
22” x 28”
The two Marys of Jesus’ story are two facets of the sacred feminine energy which for so long has been repressed by a male-dominated society. Mother Mary represents the pure, consecrated, spiritual aspect, and Mary Magdalene the earthly, passionate, sexual aspect.
In Christianity Mother Mary was exalted for her purity which Christian doctrine asserts existed only in her. The rest of us are born sinners. She is the eternal virgin - a sexless being - suggesting that sex is sinful. This notion is further emphasized in the Christian interpretation of Mary Magdalene who came to be known as the ‘penitent sinner’ and prostitute (although the Bible makes no solid claims that her ‘sins’ were sexual ones).
In early Gnostic gospels Mary called Magdalene is Jesus’ most beloved disciple and his companion. There are theories that she was a High Priestess of the Egyptian Goddess Isis, a highly spiritual woman who was also practiced in the art of tantra, the movement of sexual energy. So she would have been Jesus’ consort; his equal, and the only apostle who had a deeper understanding of his teachings. However, in the Bible (edited by a male hierarchy) her importance is virtually written out of the story. (Interestingly, Jesus’ twelve disciples were all male who some of the non-canonical gospels suggest were jealous of Jesus’ love for Mary.)
In the patriarchal Christian dogma, Jesus is celibate, his Mother a perpetual virgin, and Mary Magdalene a repentant whore. This male hierarchy denied a sexually active expression of divinity. But sexuality is the dancing together of male and female energies! And the feminine sexual energy is the creative force of nature. It is a generative energy which enables higher practices of spiritual development.
So there is a fragmentation in the Christian myth; Mother Mary is a spiritual being stripped of her sexuality, and Mary Magdalene a sexual being stripped of her spirituality.
Another way to look at it is in relation to the chakras.
Mother Mary represents the upper chakras which correspond to higher mental and spiritual realms and Mary Magdalene represents the lower chakras which correspond to physical matters and the material plane. When there is an imbalance within the chakra system, whether favouring the higher or the lower, it creates turbulence in the human experience and hampers a harmonious and truly fulfilled existence.
It’s all speculation but the theme is deeply resonant with me and this painting represents to me a re-balancing and reunification of these two aspects of Divine Feminine energy. A marriage of the two Marys.

Why is time maturing so much faster than me!
Annular Solar Eclipse of May 10, 2013, Australia.
today (thursday) my mom tried to comb out the many knots and dreads in my hair, and a lot of it was a lost cause so she just cut 4-5 inches off (without even telling me. just *snip* and i see a huge chunk of hair in her hand). it’s weird not having a rat’s nest hanging off my head anymore.
also my glasses broke last week so i’ve been wearing my old ones
Turns out there is a price to pay for protecting your rainforests.

wow this is outrageous, why isn’t this going around? from the link:
Infinito Gold, a Canadian mining company, just slapped Costa Rica with a $1 billion lawsuit simply because the country decided its rainforests were more important than an open-pit gold mine.
Lauded as one of the countries with the most beautiful rainforests, it’s no wonder Costa Rica rejected Infinito’s mine. Costa Rica’s rainforest is home to many endangered species such the green macaw. Gold mining also uses toxic chemicals such as cyanide, which often leaks into and pollutes nearby lakes and rivers.
A subsidiary of Infinito Gold has announced that a massive lawsuit is “imminent”, so we need to act now. If thousands of us stand together, we can show Infinito that countries such as Costa Rica should have the right to protect their rainforests without being persecuted by corporations.
